Director & Screenwriter

Devashish Makhija has written, directed and served as associate producer on ‘BHONSLE’ (Best Actor, APSA; Best Director & Screenplay, Barcelona); and ‘AJJI’ (Fresh Blood Best Film at Beaune, France, 2018; New Currents international competition, Busan). He had started his film career researching and assisting on ‘Black Friday’ (dir. Anurag Kashyap); and has written and directed the multiple award-winning short films, ‘Taandav’, ‘El’Ayichi’, ‘Agli Baar’, ‘Absent’, ‘Rahim Murge Pe Mat Ro’ (MOMA Paris, Best of Indian Contemporary Art), ‘Happy’, ‘Cycle’ and ‘Cheepatakadumpa’. He is also a widely published author and graphic artist, having written a novel ‘Oonga’, an anthology of short stories ‘Forgetting’ (HarperCollins), a collection of graphic poetry ‘Occupying Silence’, and the bestselling children’s picture books ‘When Ali became Bajrangbali’ and ‘Why Paploo was perplexed’. As the range of themes and styles suggest, Devashish seeks to find new and purposeful cinematic aesthetics with every film. A prolific writer and filmmaker, he has a number of screenplays of different genres ready and restless to be made into films. He founded Makhijafilm to find opportunities for unforeseen ways to move audiences – even while raising pertinent questions – through his stories.
